This is one of the toughest comparisons in the DJI lineup right now. The Mini 5 Pro was a genuine surprise — DJI packed a 1-inch sensor into a sub-250g drone for the first time ever, which means it directly challenges the Air 3S in image quality. The Air 3S costs $340 more, weighs nearly three times as much, but brings a second telephoto camera and significantly longer flight time. Neither drone is wrong — they just suit different situations.

Both drones use a 1-inch CMOS sensor — the Mini 5 Pro was the first sub-250g drone to achieve this. In real-world testing on an Alaskan glacier, reviewers found the footage looked nearly identical in good light. The Mini 5 Pro actually edges ahead slightly in dynamic range thanks to DJI's new dual ISO fusion system, showing marginally more shadow detail. In practical terms, both drones will give you stunning 4K footage — this is no longer a clear win for the Air 3S.
The Air 3S's 70mm telephoto camera is its biggest practical advantage over the Mini 5 Pro. For wildlife, real estate, sports, or any subject you can't get physically close to, the ability to switch between wide and zoomed perspectives is genuinely useful. The Mini 5 Pro has a single wide camera only — no optical zoom. If you find yourself wishing for a tighter shot, the Air 3S is the better tool.
The Mini 5 Pro's 225° rotating gimbal shoots true 4K vertical video with a wider field of view. The Air 3S is limited to 2.7K for vertical. If you create content for TikTok, Instagram Reels, or YouTube Shorts, this difference is significant — the Mini 5 Pro's vertical footage looks native to those platforms while the Air 3S is visibly cropped.
45 minutes vs 36 minutes is a real difference in the field. Nine extra minutes per battery means fewer swaps during a shoot and more flexibility on longer missions. For casual use it's less critical, but for professional or commercial shoots where you're racing the light, the Air 3S has a meaningful edge.
The Mini 5 Pro at 249.9g stays just under the FAA's 250g threshold for recreational registration. Hobbyist flyers in the US don't need to register it, which simplifies things for casual use. The Air 3S at 724g requires FAA registration regardless of use. Note: commercial operators need Part 107 certification for either drone regardless of weight.
