Potensic ATOM 3 Review 2026: Is It Worth It Over the ATOM 2?

By DJI Gear Portal — Affiliate Blog

The Potensic ATOM 3 launched in June 2026 as the successor to the ATOM 2, and it's Potensic's most serious attempt yet at competing with DJI's lightweight drones. This page pulls together what professional reviewers found, separates what the company claims from what testers measured, and helps you decide whether it's worth the extra money over the ATOM 2.

What's New Compared to the ATOM 2

A bigger camera sensor. DroneDJ reports the ATOM 3 uses a 1/1.3-inch sensor, a real step up from the half-inch sensor in the ATOM 2. A larger sensor generally helps in low light and gives footage more room to be edited. Potensic also added a log-style color profile called P-Log, and ND filters are now offered for the ATOM 3, which DroneDJ called its biggest complaint about the ATOM 2.

A sturdier build. Reviewers describe it as feeling more premium than the ATOM 2 while still staying under the 249g mark that keeps registration lighter in many countries. Mighty Gadget notes it ships with full-cover propeller guards.

A new controller. The RC PTD 2 screen controller has a 5.5-inch 1080p display with 900 nits of brightness, according to T3. TechRadar's reviewer found the controls take practice for precise moves, so allow for a learning curve.

Flight Time: Claims vs. Reality

This is where sources disagree, so here's what each reported. TechRadar lists a 2,590mAh battery rated for up to 40 minutes. Tom's Guide calls up to 50 minutes class-leading. DroneDJ describes roughly 40 to 50 minutes depending on conditions. Mighty Gadget points out that the 40-minute figure is measured in lab conditions, hovering or flying steadily with no recording. DroneXL also notes that flight time, range and brightness are manufacturer claims it had not independently verified at launch.

Potensic's own overview graphic, shown at the top of this page, lists two batteries: 40 minutes on the standard battery and 50 minutes on an extended-range one. That likely explains why some reviews quote 40 minutes and others 50.

Practical takeaway: plan on meaningfully less than the headline number when you're actually filming, and bring a spare battery. Even so, its rated 40 minutes compares well with the 38 minutes Mighty Gadget lists for the DJI Mini 3, 36 for the DJI Lito X1, and 31 for the DJI Flip.

What It Still Lacks

No obstacle avoidance. Tom's Guide calls this disappointing at the ATOM 3's price. You're the collision avoidance, so be careful around trees, walls and bridges.

Connection hiccups. DroneDJ reports that some of the connection problems it had with the ATOM 2 carried over to the ATOM 3, even with the new controller.

Range claims. Potensic claims up to 16 km with the new controller, but DroneDJ could not reach that in testing. Treat it as a best-case figure.

Price

Reports vary. Tom's Guide lists the ATOM 3 at about $429 at Amazon, roughly $100 more than the ATOM 2. T3 listed a US price of $679.99 and tested a Fly More Combo that includes the new controller, which may explain the gap. Check which bundle you're looking at before comparing prices.

Who Should Buy It

Buy the ATOM 3 if you want the best camera and longest flight time Potensic offers, you shoot in lower light, or you plan to edit and color grade your footage.

Skip it if you're on a tight budget (the ATOM 2 is cheaper and still capable) or if obstacle avoidance matters to you, since neither Potensic model has it.

Bottom Line

The ATOM 3 is a real upgrade over the ATOM 2, mainly for the sensor, build and feature set, and reviewers who tested it generally found it a convincing DJI alternative for the money. The headline flight time and range numbers are manufacturer claims, so budget for less in practice. If the ATOM 3's price is a stretch, the ATOM 2 remains a solid choice.
